David de la Fuente wins GP Miguel Indurain

David de la Fuente gave Fuji-Servetto their second victory of the 2009 season, after a sensational finishing rush towards the line on top of the Santuario del Puy, the last climb of the GP Miguel Indurain (UCI 2.HC), ridden over a hard 199-km route around the good old town of Estella in northern Spain. El Puy was the main point of attention in a race that saw the rider from Cantabria shift the expectations by clearly beating Alexandr Kolobnev (Saxo Bank) and 2008 winner Fabian Wegmann (Milram).

"This win was a great, surprising one. This kind of up-and-down races suit me really well, and I always dreamt of winning one of this, so I've made one of my dreams come true this afternoon. Claiming this win after losing Llodio's sprint to Samuel Sanchez was like a move of freedom, anyone knows how much I've suffered by that. The fact that Caisse d'Epargne controlled the race in that way helped me a lot, because I knew the race would end up being easier. Even a bigger field at the foot of the last climb that I expected, I'd have preferred to come into a smaller group to get a better position easier. The motorcycle crashing in front of me almost caught me in a cut, but I suddenly turned left and avoided itting it. At 300 meters from the finish, I saw myself riding along with Kolobnev and Wegmann; I saw that have force enough to rush from there and come into the finish, and it went perfectly. This victory is for everyone into the team, as we've suffered from very difficult problems during the last months and we must support each other. Now we must work for Juanjo [Cobo] at the Tour of the Basque Country to get a good result, and go on in this way for the rest of the season".

11-7-08 - Tour de France

David De la Fuente takes over the Mountains Classification. David de la Fuente put on the polka-dot jersey in France like he did two years ago.

"I´m really excited because, to me, this jersey is the best. I wore it for seven days in 2006 so putting it on again now makes me very happy, even if I´m wearing it only one day. I feel quite strong today after a difficult start of the Tour, when I didn´t feel very comfortable. Initially I started the attack today to supply my teammate who was in front; after that I started to see the possibility of a coup, and finally we opened a gap. After the first climb, our men in the car told me that if I led over all the remaining climbs, I´d take over the Mountains Classification. I just wanted to get to the top of the last climb on the front, but I continued my efforts and saved a small margin ahead of the chasers. The lead in the Mountains Classification was my reward. I´ll fight to keep the jersey on my shoulders, although it won´t be easy, as I´m one point ahead of the second."
